Glossary Term

Form Closure

Form closure refers to the contribution of joint shape and structure to the stability of a joint, often observed in the sacroiliac joint and the sacrum. This term is closely related to force closure, which involves the use of muscles and ligaments to provide stability. Related glossary terms include force closure, joint stability, and load transfer.

Form Closure: Form closure is the relative contribution of joint shape and structure to the stability of a joint (1,2). Form closure is most often used in reference to the "rough" articulating surfaces of the sacroiliac joint and the wedge shape of the sacrum; however, force closure and form closure have been mentioned in the literature referring to other joints.
