Frequently Asked Questions About Continuing Competency Units (CEUs) and Continuing Education Units (CECs)

  • What does CEC stand for? CEC continuing education credits.
  • What does CEU stand for? CEU stands for continuing education unit.
  • What is the difference between CEC and CEU? These terms are synonymous, though different organizations may prefer to use one or the other.
  • What is 2 CEUs? Generally, 1 CEC or CEU is equivalent to 1 "contact hour," which is approximately 1 hour of study or 1 hour of presented material.
  • What are examples of CECs/CEUs? CECs/CEUs are typically awarded for pre-approved online courses, live workshops, webinars, and academic work (e.g., PhD progress, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations).
  • Are CEUs worth anything? Yes, CEUs are necessary for license renewal in most states. However, the quality of courses can vary significantly, so it's important to research before committing time and money to a course.

We know that our colleagues want to be better, help more, and deliver unparalleled results, so they need the most accurate information available. The most accurate information can only be achieved with a systematic approach to developing evidence-based courses. That is why every course we offer is built from a systematic review of all available peer-reviewed and published research, with a focus on improving practical application. With the Brookbush Institute, you never have to decide which "expert opinion" you "believe" when two or more courses contradict (which is all too common on other platforms). Although science slowly evolves over time, and our conclusions may be refined, you can be assured that the content we provide is the most well-supported conclusion that could be developed at the time of publication, based on research and outcomes, not expert opinion.
  • Designed to be the Education Platform All of Wish Existed: All Brookbush Institute certifications are offered with an innovative system of modular courses, iterative testing, and credits (no summative final exam). Our courses include video, illustrations, audio, and text to ensure the learner has the format that they prefer wherever they are. Listen to courses in the car, watch close-captioned videos during breaks at work, or study the text and take notes at home. We are also incredibly passionate about making it comfortable to study from your phone so that you can sneak in study time at any time. Our goal is to develop the most accessible, flexible, and convenient education platform ever.
  • Affordability and Access are Part of our Mission: We are the only education provider in the industry to include our certifications in a true monthly (or yearly) membership plan. This reduces the initial cost of certification to just 3 - 5% of comparable certifications, and you can cancel anytime.

What our members are saying

education is invaluable

I have my personal trainer certificate through here and am almost finished my human movement specialist certification. Overall, the education that Brookbush has packaged together for clinicians and trainers is invaluable. I am a physio assistant so coming from more of a rehab background I appreciate that this education has been beneficial both as a trainer and in a rehab setting. I love that I have been able to do all learning at my own pace and able to work around my schedule. Thank you for setting up this platform! Highly recommend :)

incredibly helpful

Brookbush has been incredibly helpful since I was in massage school and now as I’m in my career! I run my own practice and it gives me the resources I need to not only improve what I already know, but also help me navigate better, more efficient ways of treatment.

thoroughly detailed explanation

We learn principles in academia, we learn cool new modalities via whatever specialty certification, but BBI really concentrates on the nuances of passive treatment and they do a fantastic job. The format in which BBI instructs soft tissue specialists (DPTs, Chiros, ATs) like myself feels like almost like an apprenticeship. You get a thoroughly detailed explanation of the “why’s”, and a visual comprehension of how to apply. Personally, I believe application is where the good and the great are distinguished.

incredible resource for any movement nerds

I have been following Brent Brookbush for nearly a decade- back when I was a personal Trainer and now as a Physical Therapist. BBI is an incredible resource for any movement nerds and corrective exercise specialists! The information is thorough with multiple real world applications. I am looking forward to an in-person Manual Therapist course the second they do one a little bit closer to Virginia ;)

Highly recommend

I recently completed the CPT course. It was demanding yet practical. I would highly recommend it for anyone wanting an education about human movement.

website is phenomenal

I am a 70 yr old chiropractor and no other healthcare provider was able to come up with an exercise protocol particular to my structural and balances and muscle deficits and keep me in the game. And as for continuing education on human skeletal movement, the website is phenomenal full of great exercises for particular mechanical dysfunction.

Lesson 20: More on the Human Movement Systems

The study of human movement science includes the relationships between the skeletal, fascial, nervous, and muscular systems. This course covers more detail regarding arthrokinematic motions (slide/glide, roll/spin, pivot), the fascial system, the function of the nervous system/mechanoreceptors (Pacinian corpuscles, Ruffini endings, Golgi tendon organ, and muscles spindle fibers), and the "rules of muscles" (function).

Active versus Passive: Is Exercise more Effective than Manual Therapy?

Recently, the phrase "active is better than passive" has been published in articles, memes, and thrown around in chat boards as if it's some undeniable truth. But I am not sure how this myth got started. There is absolutely no support in the research for this statement.  So, let's start by stating the facts. Based on the available research, active interventions are NOT better than passive interventions.

We Think About Continuing Education Credit Approval (So you don't have to)

We Think About Continuing Education Credit Approval (So you don't have to)

Currently, the only solution we are aware of to reduce the accreditation confusion problem and help our colleagues with their continuing education and certification needs is to build a massive accreditation portfolio. That is, we do the research to determine which accreditations are necessary, acquire as many accreditations as we can to ensure everyone is covered, and ensure that our colleagues can demonstrate continuing education and certification completion with documentation that is accreditor-compliant.

Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) is Relatively Ineffective: Research Confirmed

Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) is Relatively Ineffective: Research Confirmed

Research Summary Statement: The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) available that compare pain neuroscience education (PNE) to other interventions imply that PNE is unlikely to be more effective than biomedical education, and is unlikely to result in additional benefit when added to supervised manual therapy, exercise, and/or the combination of other effective interventions. Further, the addition of manual therapy and exercise to PNE reliably results in significant improvement in patient outcomes, implying that PNE alone cannot be considered an optimal treatment approach. The addition of PNE to a home exercise program may enhance patient outcomes (perhaps due to enhanced effort and compliance during exercise). Last, PNE does reliably improve Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) scores; however, the validity of this finding and/or correlation with other recovery outcome measures is questionable.
