Welcome to the Brookbush Institute CPT Portal

The purpose of this exam is to certify individuals who can design and instruct safe and effective exercise programs to assist in achieving health, fitness, strength, and performance goals. This is a standalone personal trainer certification exam that has been developed in accordance with the accreditor's guidelines and is separate from the other credentials and education provided by the Brookbush Institute. Individuals who have completed Brookbush Institute education do not receive points or credits that would affect their exam scoring.

What is the difference between the "Brookbush Institute Certified Personal Trainer Certificate (BI-CPT)" and the "Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Certification"?

The BI-CPT is an advanced credential awarded by the Brookbush Institute that reflects mastery of an evidence-based, systematic, client-centered, and outcome- driven approach to personal training. It is earned through an innovative credit- based and iterative testing process delivered on the Brookbush Institute’s proprietary online platform, and is included with an active membership to BrookbushInstitute.com.

The CPT certification exam is a standalone assessment, developed using nationally recognized best practices for certification programs, including job task analysis, secure exam development, psychometric analysis, and formal cut score standard setting, and governed by an independent Certification Governing Board. The intent of the exam is to verify that candidates meet minimum competency standards for certification. This exam is entirely separate from all Brookbush Institute educational programs and credentials (BI-CPT, HMS, and IMT). Completion of Brookbush Institute courses does not provide points, credit, or preferential scoring toward exam results. The CPT credential is earned solely by passing a proctored exam, available either online or in person.

Who can take the CPT certification exam?

Eligibility to sit for the exam is based on meeting the published eligibility requirements and completing eligibility verification prior to scheduling. The exam is intended to differentiate a minimally qualified candidate from an individual who does not yet demonstrate the minimum competency required to safely and skillfully practice as a certified personal trainer (CPT).

Examples of candidates who may be eligible include:

  • Individuals who have studied independently or through any preparatory pathway and meet the published eligibility requirements.
  • Currently practicing personal trainers and fitness professionals who meet eligibility requirements and want to demonstrate minimum competency through a proctored exam.
  • Individuals who recently completed a preparatory program and meet eligibility requirements.

Once eligibility is verified, the candidate is issued a unique, non-transferable voucher or coupon code to schedule the proctored exam, online or in person.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to sit for the CPT certification exam, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be able to read and understand English, the exam is administered in English only
  • Present a valid government issued photo ID at check in for identity verification and test security

Eligibility verification and scheduling

Before a scheduling voucher is issued, candidates must attest that they meet the eligibility requirements and agree to the exam policies as part of eligibility verification. Once eligibility is verified, each eligible candidate is issued a unique, non-transferable voucher or coupon code to schedule the proctored exam, online or in person. Voucher codes may be revoked if eligibility cannot be confirmed, if information provided is inaccurate, or if exam policies are violated.
