Volar

Volar (Palmar): An anatomical direction that refers to the palm of the hand, the palm side of the forearm, and, less commonly, the sole of the foot. For example, the lumbrical muscles are located on the volar side of the metacarpals. When used in reference to the hand, a synonym for volar is palmar.

Examples of volar used in reference to anatomy, exercise, and physical rehabilitation:

  • Volar Plate: A thick ligament on the palmar (volar) side of the finger joints, preventing hyperextension.
  • Volar Glide Mobilization: A manual therapy technique used to improve joint mobility by applying a gliding force in the direction of the palm of the hand.
  • Volar Grasp Strengthening Exercises: These are physical rehabilitation exercises that focus on strengthening the muscles involved in gripping and grasping, which are located on the volar side of the hand and forearm.
