00:04 - 00:07This is Brett of The brookbush Institute in this video. We're gonna go over
00:07 - 00:10rectus for Morris and quadriceps vibration or percussive release
00:10 - 00:13using the hypervolt from hyper ice. I'm gonna
00:13 - 00:16have my friend Melissa come out. She's gonna help me demonstrate. Now. This is
00:16 - 00:19a Release Technique. So I'm gonna assume we're trying to increase mobility and
00:19 - 00:22that that is based on assessment. So if we're doing the
00:22 - 00:25quad and rectus femoris, I'm going to assume that maybe she either has
00:25 - 00:28a hip extension or knee flexion restriction, maybe
00:28 - 00:31on the overhead squat assessment. She had excessive forward
00:31 - 00:34lean or knees bow out or an interior pelvic tilt
00:34 - 00:37but we had a good reason to do this and something to
00:37 - 00:40reassess to see how effective this technique was. Now you'll
00:40 - 00:43notice that Melissa is in Sue Pine on a table
00:43 - 00:46that does have some advantages because I can actually have Melissa scoot
00:46 - 00:49over just a little bit and then hang her leg
00:49 - 00:52off the table and by bending her knee like
00:52 - 00:56this. I can actually put my knee against her shin and control
00:55 - 00:58the amount of tension in her quad
00:58 - 01:01and rectus for more. So this is going to come in handy because with my
01:01 - 01:04Release Technique, so I want the tissue to push back against the
01:04 - 01:07Change just a little bit and putting a little stretch on
01:07 - 01:10the tissue might actually help us get a release right like you guys have noticed
01:10 - 01:13like when you stretch you get that release of tissue.
01:13 - 01:16So a little counter of intuitive with our vibration
01:16 - 01:19release techniques is we actually start on the
01:19 - 01:20higher settings.
01:21 - 01:24But we are going to start very superficial. So what
01:24 - 01:27I'm going to do is I'm going to start down by Melissa's knee
01:27 - 01:30here and you guys got to be careful because some people are a little ticklish down
01:30 - 01:33here, right? And I'm just gonna slowly glide
01:33 - 01:34through the tissue.
01:35 - 01:38A little different than our static manual release techniques
01:38 - 01:41or a foam rolling where we're going after a specific trigger
01:41 - 01:41point.
01:43 - 01:46In this case. I'm going to actually kind of go through all of the muscle.
01:49 - 01:52Think you'll find that you get a good release throughout the
01:52 - 01:56entirety of the muscle tissue. It's a little less specific than
01:55 - 01:57that trigger point release techniques.
01:58 - 01:58however
02:00 - 02:01As you're going through.
02:02 - 02:05Try to make note of where the tissue feels a little denser, right?
02:05 - 02:07It's a little harder to push through.
02:08 - 02:11Maybe where you're getting some twitch responses, like every once
02:11 - 02:14in a while, you will hit a trigger point. You'll see fibers are
02:14 - 02:15fascicles actually twitch.
02:19 - 02:22places where the the patient or client says
02:22 - 02:23that they're more tender
02:23 - 02:26All of those are going to be good places to go back to
02:26 - 02:28when I show you guys how to use this technique.
02:29 - 02:32Or modify this technique to get a little deeper in the tissue
02:32 - 02:35and Melissa's kind of kicking back against me here. So I'm
02:35 - 02:37guessing that this is a tender spot.
02:39 - 02:40We'll kind of make mental note of that for later.
02:44 - 02:47And as I'm going through you guys all notice I'm staying away
02:47 - 02:50from her kneecap. I'm also staying away from
02:50 - 02:51her Asis.
02:52 - 02:55This thing does not feel good over bony protuberances.
02:56 - 02:59If you're a little unsure of somebody's Anatomy, you
02:59 - 03:02could always put a thumb there right or put
03:02 - 03:05a thumb there and make sure you know, you don't go past your
03:05 - 03:05own thumb.
03:07 - 03:10You guys will notice I'm just using the weight of the machine here. I
03:10 - 03:11don't need a lot of pressure.
03:13 - 03:16And nice the hypervolt is light enough that I can use one hand. I
03:16 - 03:19could even be like monitoring or
03:19 - 03:23trying to palpate tissue and see where she has
03:23 - 03:26maybe the most restriction like isn't mostly in her
03:26 - 03:29rectus femoris as opposed to like more of like the top of
03:29 - 03:30her vastus lateralis.
03:33 - 03:37All right, so we'll say that we've gone through her whole
03:36 - 03:37muscle here.
03:38 - 03:41Right now maybe I want to get a little deeper into the
03:41 - 03:41tissue.
03:42 - 03:45Well, I can try with this piece. Although this piece is pretty
03:45 - 03:48wide and flat. I might want to go with something that
03:48 - 03:50has a little smaller surface area.
03:53 - 03:56The hypervolt comes with these two pieces. This one's
03:56 - 03:59kind of forked like so you could I guess essentially go
03:59 - 04:02after two trigger points at once. It does
04:02 - 04:03come in handy.
04:04 - 04:08This piece is what we're gonna start with here, which I think hypervolt calls
04:07 - 04:08the bullet.
04:10 - 04:13And since I'm going to try to get a little deeper in the tissue.
04:14 - 04:15I might also do this.
04:17 - 04:18Take some tension out.
04:19 - 04:21Right now I can get a little deeper.
04:22 - 04:25Without getting kick back from that tissue. I'm also
04:25 - 04:28going to start at a lower setting. So maybe I use
04:28 - 04:29two.
04:30 - 04:34See if Melissa can stand this not so well, let's
04:33 - 04:36see if she stands the lower setting a little bit better.
04:37 - 04:41And so let's try this. Is that better? Okay, so
04:40 - 04:44we're just going to use that lower setting and
04:45 - 04:48as I mentioned I kind of kept track that like she had a tender Point
04:48 - 04:48here.
04:49 - 04:52So maybe I'm going to slowly glide through that that tender
04:52 - 04:52point.
04:55 - 04:58Right wait for that tissue to give way you get notice that
04:58 - 05:01where I was really superficial with that flat
05:01 - 05:03piece. I'm kind of digging in a little bit.
05:04 - 05:04don't
05:05 - 05:08press as hard as you possibly can. We're not we're not trying to
05:08 - 05:11strike her femur. Like that's definitely not the goal.
05:11 - 05:13You're just digging in a little bit.
05:15 - 05:17And then slowly working your way through the tissue.
05:22 - 05:25Twitch response there has that trigger point let
05:25 - 05:25go.
05:26 - 05:26and
05:30 - 05:31as we get higher into our
05:32 - 05:35quad and her we're getting into like thicker more
05:35 - 05:37dense muscle tissue. We could have Melissa sit up.
05:38 - 05:41Right. So now we're shortening the rectus for Morris even more.
05:42 - 05:45And maybe that allows us to get even deeper into
05:45 - 05:47the tissue if we feel like we have a really deep trigger point.
05:51 - 05:55And of course the nice thing is since this is a very safe technique
05:54 - 05:57guys. You can't really do much damage. If you
05:57 - 06:00do have an athlete who's coming in often and
06:00 - 06:02you feel confident in
06:04 - 06:07Their ability and want to do this effectively.
06:08 - 06:11Let's say I wanted to go grab a couple pieces of equipment to
06:11 - 06:14set her up with like maybe her isolated activation techniques. I
06:14 - 06:14can go.
06:15 - 06:16Here you go.
06:16 - 06:19Make sure you work on that area where you have those tender trigger
06:19 - 06:22points. And of course she can feel those trigger points probably better than
06:22 - 06:22I can.
06:23 - 06:23All right.
06:25 - 06:26She was a really.
06:28 - 06:31Advanced athlete a lead athlete competition and Recovery
06:31 - 06:34was really really important to her. I might even suggest that
06:34 - 06:37she purchases one of these for home because the quads are
06:37 - 06:40definitely an area that somebody can get to on their own. I know
06:40 - 06:43personally I use this after every basketball game.
06:44 - 06:47Definitely convenient to kind of just be doing in the on the
06:47 - 06:50ride home just be like going through my quads and making sure I get a little
06:50 - 06:53bit of that help on the recovery side
06:53 - 06:53of things.
06:55 - 06:56How's that feel?
06:57 - 06:57ticklish
06:58 - 07:01Yeah, this is one area that Melissa is
07:01 - 07:02quite ticklish on.
07:03 - 07:06I know some people are a little bit more ticklish to
07:06 - 07:06the vibration.
07:08 - 07:10And in a little different areas than others.
07:12 - 07:13Good. How does that feel?
07:14 - 07:14Good.
07:16 - 07:16All right.
07:17 - 07:19So go ahead and turn this off.
07:20 - 07:20All right.
07:21 - 07:24And then I would follow up with reassessment.
07:25 - 07:28So if we're doing the quad maybe I want to retest knee
07:28 - 07:32flexion. If we were doing this for hip extension.
07:31 - 07:34Maybe I want to retest her hip extension. Maybe
07:34 - 07:37I want to look back at her overhead squat. Remember guys,
07:37 - 07:40we're not just using a cool tool
07:40 - 07:44to do a cool technique. We're trying to get some sort
07:43 - 07:46of effective outcome. So to quickly
07:46 - 07:49go through all of the progressions we went through. Can you
07:49 - 07:49lay down real quick?
07:51 - 07:52We had several positions.
07:53 - 07:53we had
07:54 - 07:57knee bent off the table. And of course I could
07:57 - 07:59control how much knee Bend.
07:59 - 08:02I then went a little deeper or got a little less tension in
08:02 - 08:05the tissue but putting her leg straight but notice
08:05 - 08:08she's still in a hip extended position or at least a hip
08:08 - 08:10neutral position. I could then have her.
08:11 - 08:12Sit all the way up.
08:12 - 08:13I have different.
08:15 - 08:18Heads that I can use for the hypervolt, right? I told
08:18 - 08:20you guys that I like the flat round piece.
08:21 - 08:23for lower extremity in particular
08:24 - 08:27I think I think it gives a very consistent feel being
08:27 - 08:30that it's it's a solid piece and it
08:30 - 08:33has a good surface area to it. And then once I
08:33 - 08:36was going after more like trigger points and specific points of
08:36 - 08:39tissue density, I switched to the bullet, although you
08:39 - 08:42could probably also get away with using this tool which is
08:42 - 08:44kind of like this this Fork shaped tool.
08:46 - 08:49Start with assessment follow up with assessment. I hope you guys
08:49 - 08:52really enjoy this hyper volt from hyper ice.
08:52 - 08:53It's definitely a game changer.
