Meg Trahan Asks:

I am memorizing all the isolated functions for the major muscles and came across "horizontal adduction" for the pectorals major. How does “horizontal adduction” differ from just "adduction"?

Brent Brookbush

This is not uniform in all textbooks, although it should be

"Horizontal Adduction" is adduction (bone moving closer to midline) in the horizontal plane. Example, bringing your hands together in front of your chest, as you do during a chest flye.

“Adduction” is a bone moving closer to the midline in the frontal plane. Example, movement in which the arms return to your sides as you would see during a lat pull down.
