Base of Support

The base of support (BoS) is the area beneath an object or person, and the area within the perimeter created by every point of contact that the object or person makes with the supporting surface. BoS is a critical concept in many areas, including sports, rehabilitation, and balance training. The size and position of BoS can affect an object's or person's stability and balance. For example, during a single-leg balance, the BoS is the area of the foot in contact with the surface; however, when a person is standing on two feet, the BoS is the area of both feet and the surface between them. Understanding and improving BoS can help prevent falls, enhance athletic performance, and support rehabilitation efforts
