Agonist (Muscle)
Agonists: Muscles that perform a joint action, including the prime mover and synergists . That is, unlike the terms prime mover and synergist, agonist refers to all of the muscles that can perform a joint action.
For example, during a deadlift , the joint action is hip extension, the prime mover is the gluteus maximus , and the synergists are the hamstrings and posterior fibers of the adductor magnus ; however, the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, and posterior fibers of the adductor magnus are agonists.
- Synonym: By definition, the agonists are the prime mover and all synergists.
- Opposite: The antagonists are all of the muscles that perform the opposite joint action.
